Liposuction

Have you ever looked into the mirror and routinely seen the same problem area no matter how much you diet or exercise? Whether it’s the love handles, saddlebags, inner thighs, double chin, or the area just beneath a bra strap, women and men from Boise, Pocatello, Jackson Hole, and surrounding areas are turning to liposuction in Idaho Falls with Dr. Mark Freeman. Liposuction, the removal of unwanted fatty deposits, is most often performed around areas of stubborn fat that fail to improve with diet and exercise. It is always enjoyable for me to correct a problem area for someone that has been a lifelong struggle in just a matter of hours.

About Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction is a very popular cosmetic surgery procedure. Even though liposuction is performed through small incisions, it is not a simple operation to be taken lightly. Liposuction does require an artist’s eye and sculptor’s touch, but also the knowledge of complex physiology behind fluid and electrolyte shifts in the cardiovascular system. I believe it is best performed by a plastic surgeon who is intimately aware of the intricate anatomy that lies beneath the skin and fascia layers.

As always, I spend a great deal of time talking with each patient to develop a customized plan to meet their expectations. It is important to me that each concern or problem area is addressed separately so that the perfect plan can be designed. As a surgeon, I use my knowledge of anatomy, but liposuction also requires an artist’s touch to visualize the lines of the body and to create the proper proportions of the ideal silhouette. Those of us with significant training in liposuction know that what is left behind is often more important than what is removed. Having learned advanced liposuction techniques from experts in Los Angeles, I believe I offer a unique perspective for my liposuction patients from Pocatello and Twin Falls, Idaho, and beyond.

It’s important to remember that liposuction is not intended to treat cellulite.

Evolution of Liposuction

Recent advances in the science of liposuction have led to some confusing names and claims. The traditional method of liposuction uses a tumescent fluid to numb the area as well as reduce bleeding and break down fatty tissue. A cannula is then inserted beneath the skin to break up and remove fat cells. This technique is very useful, but can be very traumatic to the tissues leading to significant bruising and postoperative soreness. Ultrasonic liposuction is a newer technique that allowed surgeons to emulsify fat through similar incisions with less trauma than the traditional cannula. The problem with the ultrasonic technique was that it could actually damage the skin as well as the fat if not done carefully. Newer techniques such as Power Assisted Liposuction, utilize vibrations to assist the surgeon in breaking up the fat cells, which is less traumatic to surrounding nerves and vessels. These newer techniques often result in less bruising and reduced recovery times.

Smartlipo™ is a fairly recent advance that has revolutionized liposuction as we know it. This tiny cannula, that is as small as a needle, is inserted beneath the skin and a small laser is used to dissolve the surrounding fatty tissue and to tighten the skin from below. The advantage to such a small needle is that it is easily done while the patient is awake and leads to very little bruising and “downtime.” Smartlipo works best on smaller pockets of fat, but can be used for many trouble spots. For larger areas, Smartlipo can be combined with Power Assisted Liposuction to give the best results in fat removal and skin tightening.

Combined Procedures

Many of my patients have liposuction performed at the same time as other procedures, to save both recovery time and expense. These types of combined procedures are quite possible in healthy individuals and often lead to a more defined contour following surgery of the abdomen or breasts. In fact, liposuction is a key component to many combined procedures such as a Mommy Makeover or weight loss rejuvenation. Several of my tummy tuck patients are happy to combine their procedure with liposuction for comprehensive body rejuvenation and contouring. Safety is my first priority and a number of health concerns must be addressed to determine if you are a candidate for a combined procedure during our detailed consultation.

Liposuction isn’t your only option for body contouring at Freeman Plastic Surgery. Nonsurgical alternatives such as CoolSculpting® PLUS can smooth and tone your abdomen, thighs, neck, and more without an incision. Although its results aren’t as dramatic as those of liposuction, it’s a great option for men and women who wish to selectively reduce fat without downtime. You can also combine CoolSculpting with CoolTone®, a nonsurgical muscle-toning procedure that firms your abdomen, buttocks, or thighs.
